The year 9 girls Rugby team traveled to Shelley College in Huddersfield to compete against various teams across Yorkshire including teams from Hull, Barnsley and Huddersfield last week. With many girls still learning the game the team have come on leaps and bounds. This is the 2nd outing for the girls having previously competed in a Yorkshire schools competition.
Their 1st game was against Sirius Academy from Hull. This was somewhat of a baptism of fire. When they previously met Sirius; a much more experienced team, the girls lost by four tries and couldn’t manage to score. This time around it was a much more tightly contested game and the girls narrowly lost by one try and managed to score two tries of their own. This gave the girls a lot of confidence going in to the rest of the tournament. Throughout the tournament the girls scored some fantastic individual tries as well as some impressive team tries. More noteworthy was the commitment and team work displayed in defence against some big teams. The girls got stronger and stronger as the tournament progressed. In the final game the girls had definitely secured 3rd place out of 8. They needed to win their last game and rely on another result to clinch 2nd place. They won their last game with an impressive 4 try gap. As always in sport though you never want to rely on other teams results. The team should be proud of their achievements and progress in such a short space of time. Particularly considering as we later learned that half of the teams; due to a mix up by the competition organisers, were fielding a combined year 9 and 10 team. Well done!
