May I offer my thanks to all those staff that are helping to improve consistency regarding behaviour in corridors and around school. The concerted effort seems to have made a real difference but it is early days. Please keep it up.
It is important that classes are met by staff and do not have to wait unsupervised in corridors for prolonged periods. The end of lunch and break times have been a little problematic in this regard this week. Please may I ask that we support each other with this in the same way as we are doing with other aspects of consistent behaviour management.

AS/A2 Mock Exams
Please let me know if there are any students who you have concerns about or anyone who is doing particularly well. It would be good if faculties could send postcards home for those who are making very good progress.
Extended Study – Thursday 22nd January 3.30 – 7.00 pm
This would be an ideal opportunity for students to do coursework/catch up on missing work. It would be appreciated if you could encourage students to sign up on the door of C13. Thank you.

Uniform checks Y7 – 11
This will be done in two phases. Phase 1 is the week commencing 12 January. Please would all Form Tutors check uniform every day this week. The students have had their powerpoint and assembly reinforcement and should be fully aware of what is expected with regard to appearance.
I would ask you to pay particular attention to make-up, piercings and nail varnish on the girls. Additionally tight fitted leggings / jeans on boys and girls, and very short skirts on the girls. With regard to footwear could you look for canvas pumps and coloured trainers. If the trainer is totally black with no obvious markings that is acceptable.
Any students not in correct uniform please email names and issues to your DoS.
Phase 2 is the week commencing 19th January. We will call year groups to the hall to be checked again as follows:
Year 7 – Monday 19th January assembly and just into P1.
Year 8 – Monday 19th January P6 start.
Year 9 – Tuesday 20th January P2 start.
Year 10 – Monday 19th January 2.55pm (two PE groups to have checks done there).
Year 11 – Tuesday 20th January and Thursday 22nd January P5 PE, checks to be done there.
If you teach Y8, 9 or 10 students at the above times, please bring them to line up on the yard in forms. We will be as fast as possible in getting them all back to lessons except Y10 who will be dismissed at 3.20 from the hall. Please stay to assist the DoS.

Year 10 mini classroom based exams – week beginning 26th January
The calendar this year has Year 10 mini classroom based exams scheduled for the week beginning 26th January. It was felt last year that we needed to give some exam preparation earlier than just the end of Year 10. English have actually done theirs before Christmas. Please could HoFs ensure that Yr 10s have some mini, classroom based exam practice during this week.

|Ofsted preparation and work scrutiny: KHI referred to paperwork already issued. Ofsted will change from September 2015. However changes made from September 2014 must also be emphasised. There are only 3 guidance documents now. Data and work scrutiny have become the two main areas for Ofsted to determine progress. KS3 remains as important as KS4/5. The progress of disadvantaged students (pupil premium, looked after children) is also key.
CHA talked about work scrutiny being a vital tool in determining progress. The inspectors will use this to follow trails through the school. Although it is said that seating plans and lesson plans are not essential, it is advised that these are available to ensure that inspectors can see as much progress as possible. Lesson observations will be different, and inspectors will check books and remove students and their books from the lessons to discuss teaching, learning and progress.
Our work scrutiny checks are vital to ensure that we are consistently using our marking policies, providing feedback and demonstrating progress.
KHI said that our current Value Added score is not good enough and the quality of teaching and learning will be very important to improve our standing on this front.
CHA said that we will be deepening our work scrutiny procedures. The Year 11 scrutiny in November showed some good practice but too many inconsistencies. A general summary of feedback was issued to those present. Faculty line management will have already highlighted individual Faculty weaknesses.
KHI added his thoughts on this, stating that teachers need to ensure their books etc are in order with good marking and feedback.
VKI asked about work which is IT based and not as easily accessible. KHI said there must be evidence available for an inspection. MFA felt that students would tell the inspectors where their work was.
CHA said that folders of past work to evidence progress over time would also be essential. CSI asked about obtaining further book stickers; CHA has spares. AGR shared concerns about keeping staff morale high when no notice work scrutiny is in place. KHI said that the Faculty must discuss this and support is available. TST said he took full sets of books in and skimmed through these as a team to share good practice. CAN asked if the Faculty should be keeping old books through the year. KHI said that Faculties need to address how they will evidence progress and they should determine how to solve this issue together. JRI said that common sense should prevail. NDA is storing work and it is difficult logistically. Also students are wanting to take work home to show parents. JCA can students take responsibility for their work and keep a portfolio to evidence progress? It could be used for parents’ evenings too. CHA felt that could be a solution which Faculties may wish to discuss.

|6th form:Work scrutiny: MGO had issued documents in advance. The work scrutiny of around 50 files showed good practice, good organisation and useful feedback on the whole. The green penning was inconsistent however. It was suggested that tests being redone could be done in green. More grading would also be useful for students. MWA asked about some flexibility in marking and grading depending on topics being studied. This was agreed.
ALPS grades: The estimates for AS and A2 have been issued. Concerns were highlighted. Student issues must be raised, parents contacted and praise given as required to address problems.
Learning walks: These happened in November with SLT and AFL conducting the walks. It was a pleasure to see excellent classes with independent learning taking place. A few areas for development – less teacher talk, increased differentiation, but a positive experience nonetheless.
